#KiniNews: Sri Petaling cluster declared over, zero local cases

The Sri Petaling tabligh gathering cluster, which became the epicentre of the country's Covid-19 pandemic, has finally been resolved.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said no new cases from the cluster have been detected for 28 days.

Noor Hisham added that the country recorded no new Covid-19 cases from local transmission today.

This is the second time in a week the country has recorded no new local transmission. The last was on July 2nd.

Health DG: Don't blame Sri Petaling tabligh group | Kini News -  24 Mar

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has urged Malaysians not to discriminate or stigmatise the group involved in a tabligh gathering at a mosque in Sri Petaling late last month.

He said the focus should be on detecting and containing the spread of the coronavirus in that group and their contacts. 60% of the total cases in the country are linked to this cluster. 

Malaysia recorded 106 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, bringing the total to 1,624 cases.

Of the 106 new cases, he said 43 were traced to the cluster of infections from the tabligh gathering.

Malaysia has recorded 212 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours - the highest daily increase since the start of the outbreak in late January.

This brings the total number of infections to 1,518 cases.

Previously, the highest increase was on March 15, with 190 new cases in a day.

Health Ministry Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 212 new cases, 123 were traced to the tabligh gathering in Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur which took place late last month and has become the epicentre of the outbreak in Malaysia.

He also reported four new deaths, bringing the death toll to 14.

On Sunday, Malaysia's total Covid-19 cases almost doubled in a single day to 428 cases, and today that number grew to 553 cases.

Health Minister Dr Adham Baba, at the ministry's daily press conference on the Covid-19 situation, announced another three-digit increase, with 125 new cases as of Monday.

He said of these, 95 of the new cases could be traced to a tabligh gathering at Sri Petaling mosque which took place from Feb 27 to March 1.

As such, the total number of patients who participated in the gathering is 338.

Adham said the number of patients in the intensive care unit and requiring the aid of a ventilator to breath have also increased from nine to 12.
